The Morteratsch Valley is a glacier valley in the Upper Engadine region and surrounded by the glacier covered peaks of the Bernina Range. The Morteratsch glacier once reached right down to the end of the valley. As the Bernina railway was completed in 1910, a railway station of the same name was built near the glacier’s tongue. The station is still there but the glacier is now an hour’s walk away up the valley, with each decade marked, to show how great the retreat has been.
