Tristan da Cunha is together with Saint Helena and Ascension a British overseas territory.

Tristan da Cunha is the primary island of the Tristan da Cunha island group. Other islands of the group are: Stoltenhof Island, Inaccessible Island, Nightingale Island, Gough Island and Middle Island.

Queen Mary's Peak (2'060 m) on Tristan da Cunha is an active volcano with the last eruption in 1961, causing the evacuation of the 264 residents of Tristan da Cunha's.

Queen Mary's Peak is easily the highest island mountain in the South Atlantic Ocean.

Nightingale island is part of the Trinstan da Cunha group. Nightingale has two peaks on its north end. 337 metres and  293 metres high.

In 1961, a volcanic eruption of Queen Mary's peak forced the evacuation of the entire population via Cape Town to England. Most families returned in the year 1963 to Cristan da Cunha.
