The Rhône valley in the canton Valais separates the Pennine Alps from the Bernese Alps in the north. After Martigny the Rhône valley turns northwest towards Lake Geneva and separates the Chablais Alps from the Bernese Alps

The background of the miniaturesheet does correspond with the view from Salgesch (another village near Sierre) to Varneralp (2'100 m). Varneralp is an extensive alp-terain high above the Rhone valley and below the Mt. Trubelstock 2'998 m.
