Switzerland map Karte Rhone Glacier

The Rhône Glacier (source of the Rhône river) is located between the Grimsel Pass and the Furka Pass in the Urner Alps. During the last 100 years the glacier lost some of its spectacular size due to global warming and long-term measurements reveal that from 1879 to 2010, the Rhône glacier has lost 1'266 metres of its length. In 1850 the ice stream extended well into the base of the valley, but now it is barely visible from the road over the Furka and Grimsel Pass.
