In 1975 the name 'British Solomon Islands Protectorate' was formally changed to the present name. On 2 January 1976 the country became internally self-governing, proceeding to full independence on 7 July 1978.

The highest elevation in the Solomon Islands is the Mount Popomanaseu (2'335 m). It is volcanic mountain on Guadalcanal Island.
