The Taal volcano complex is situated on the island of Luzon on the Philippines. It is about 50 km in the south of the capital city of Manila. Right in the center of the island is the main crater, that holds a sulfuric lake.
Since 1572, the volcano has 33 recorded eruptions, the most devastating eruption occurred in the year 1911. The most recent volcanic activity happened in 1977, although the volcano has remained quiet since. It is still not safe, signs of increased activity appeared in 1991, 1992, 1994, and most recently, in June of 2009.
