The Mount Pinatubo is an active stratovolcano located on the island of Luzon. The Pinatubo is situated in the Tri-Cabusilan Mountain range separating the west coast of Luzon from the central plains.
In 1991 Mount Pinatubo woke from a 600-year nap and killed 600 people. The 1991 Mount Pinatubo Eruption is one of the largest volcanic eruptions in the 20th century. Its current elevation is 1'485 m (1'745 m before the 1991 eruption).

The Philippines issued five surcharge stamps for the victims of the Mount Pinatubo volcano disaster – one 25c (inland mail) and four 1 peso (foreign mail) values. Required on all air mail letters between November 16, 1992 and February 28th 1993, in addition to the necessary postage.
