Machu Picchu is a pre-Columbian 15th-century Inca site located at 2'430 metres above sea level. It is situated on a mountain ridge above the Urubamba Valley, 80 kilometres in the northwest of Cusco. The two summits which form the famous backdrop of the Inca site are known as Huayna Picchu (2'701 m) and Huchuy Picchu (2'479 m).
