Rabaul is a 8 x 14 km wide Caldera situated on the north eastern end of New Britain Island. It is named after the town of Rabaul situated inside the caldera. The Rabaul Caldera is surrounded by a volcanic ridge with its highest peak, Mount Kabiu (also known Mount Mother) 688 m.

Rabaul is one of the most active and most dangerous volcanoes in Papua New Guinea. The eight active vents are; Tovanumbatir, Kabiu, Rabalanakaia, Turanguna, Tavurvur, Sulphur Creek, Vulcan and Vulcan Island.
