Palau is an island nation located approximately 800 kilometres in the east of the Philippines.
Palau islands were made part of the Spanish East Indies in 1885, than sold to Imperial Germany in 1899, later part of the Japanese-ruled South Pacific Mandate and during World War II the islands were taken by the United States in 1944. The Republic of Palau officially became a sovereign state on October 1, 1994.
Palau is composed of a group of islands spread over approximately 459 square kilometres of the Pacific Ocean.
The highest elevation is Mt. Ngerchelchauus 242 m on the main island Babeldaob.
