The Gauri Shankar is after the Melungtse (China, 7'181 m), the second highest peak of the Rolwaling Himal. The Rolwaling Himal is situated in the east of the Langtang and Jugal Himal and in the west of the of the Mahalangur Himal and the Khumbu region. Another major peak of the Rolwaling Himal is the Bigphera Go Shar (6'729 m).

The Gauri Sankar is situated near the western edge of the Rolwaling Himal, about 100 kilometres northeast of Kathmandu. It has two summits, the lower is called Gauri and the higher Shankar.  

First Ascent: 08.05.1979 by John Roskelley (USA) and Dorje Sherpa (Nepal).
