The Mongolian Altai, also known as Ektag Altai, in western Mongolia, is bounded by the Russian Altai in the north and the Gobi Altai in the sout-east. The highest summit in the range is the Hüiten Peak (4'374 m) at the Mongolian-China border.

The Khar-Us-Nur is a huge freshwater lake and covers an area of 1'852 square kilometres. It is situated in the north of the Mongolian Altai in the Great Lakes Depression.
