The Lake Issyk Kul has a length of 182 kilometres, a width of up to 60 kilometres and covers an area of 6'236 square kilometres. This makes it the second largest mountain lake in the world after the Lake Titicaca in South America (8'288 km2, altitude-3'810, depth-281). Located at an altitude of 1,607 metres, it reaches 668 metres in depth. About 118 rivers and streams flow into this lake.

The lake's southern shore of Issyk-Kul is dominated by the Teskey Ala-Too Range of the Tian Shan mountains. The highest peak of the range is Yeltsin Peak (5'216m).

 The Kungay Ala-Too, or Kyungei Ala too of the Tian Shan runs parallel to the north shore of Issyk-Kul. Its length is about 280 km and it stretches from Boom Gorge to Kegen - Karkyrin valley. The highest point of the range is the Peak Chok Tal (4'770 m).

  Dzhety-Ogyuz or Jety-Oguz (Dzhety-Ogyuz is a popular place in Kyrgyzstan, it is located about 18 kilometres in the south-west of Karakol at the northern slope of the Teskey Ala-Too.
