The Unzen Nationalpark was established in the year 1934. In the year 1954 it extended and renamed in Unzen Amakusa-Nationalpark. It consists of two parts, the volcanoes on the Shimabara Peninsula and seashores of the Amakusa Islands.

Mount Unzen is an active volcanic group of several overlapping volcanoes and covers much of the Shimabara Peninsula.

The currently peaks of the Unzen-Complex are the Heisei Shinzan (1'486 m), Fugen-dake (1'369 m), Kusembu-dake, Azuma-dake and Bi-zan.
