The Sakurajima is an active volcano in the Kinko Bay (Kagoshima-Bay) of the Kyushu Island. The volcano was forming an island untill 1914. Since the powerful eruption of 1914 the island has been connected with the Osumi Peninsula. The volcano has three summits, known as Kita-dake, Naka-dake and Minami-dake (Northern, Central and Southern Peak).

It is part of the Kirishima-Kikowan Nationalpark and was designed by the International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth's Interior (IAVCEI) as one of the 16 Decade Volcanoes.
