The Kirishima-yama consists of 23 volcanoes, 15 craters and 10 caldera lakes in the southern part of Kyushu. The Kirishima-yama is part of the Kirishima-Kikowan Nationalpark and is one of the 100 famous Japanese mountains.

major peaks are:
Karakuni-dake, also known as Kankoku-dake (1'700 m)
Takachiho-no-mine (1'574 m)
Shinmoe-dake (1'421 m)
Koshiki-dake (1'301 m)
Hinamori-dake (1'344 m)
Io-yama (1'317 m)

The Kirishima shrine (Shinto shrine) is situated at the southwestern foot of the Takachiho-no-mine. It is said that the shrine was founded in the 6th century. The shrine had often been destroyed by eruptions. The current shrine was constructed in 1484.
