The Kirishima-Kinkowan Nationalpark covers an area of 365,86 square kilometres. It was established on March 16th 1934 as the Kirishima Nationalpark. In the year 1964 a major part of the Yakushima Island was incorporated into the park and was renamed in Kirishima-Yaku Nationalpark.

On March 16th 2012 Yakushima has been separated and became independent as Yakushima National Park and the park has been renamed again in Kirishima-Kinkowan Nationalpark. 

The Kirishima-Kinkowan Nationalpark consists of four areas:

The Kirishima volcanic group (Kirishima-yama)
The Sakurajima and the northern part of the Kinko Bay (Kagoshima Bay)
The Kaimon-dake and sea shores of the Satsuma Peninsula.
The sea shores of the Osumi Peninsula. 

The Kirishima-Kinkowan Nationalpark consists of four areas:
