The Chokai-san is an active volcano and situated at the border of the Yamagata and Akita Prefectures. It is after the Hiuchigatake the second highest mountain of the Tohuku region. It has two summits, known as Nishi-Chokai and Higashi-Chokai. It is one of the 100 famous Japanese mountains.
