The Aso-san is the largest active volcano in Japan and is among the largest in the world. It is situated within the Aso-Kuju Nationalpark. The caldera was formed 90'000 - 300'000 years ago and extends for about 25 kilometres from north to south and 18 kilometres from east to west. The Aso-san is one of the 100 famous Japanese mountains.

The central group of the Aso-san consists of the five peaks: Taka-dake (1'592 m), Naka-dake (1'506 m), Neko-dake (1'433 m), Eboshi-dake (1'337 m) and the Kishima-dake (1'326 m).
