The Aso-Kuju Nationalpark covers an area of 726.78 square kilometres of the prefectures Kumamoto and Ōita. The park was designed as Aso Nationalpark at December 4, 1934. After extension in the year 1986, it was renamed in Aso-Kuju Nationalpark.
The Aso-Kuju Nationalpark consists of the Aso-san area (with the huge Aso Caldera), the Kuju-san area (including the Kujukogen Plateau) and the area in the west of Beppu Hot Springs with the Yufu-dake and Tsurumi-dake.
