The area is situated close to the natural geothermal hot springs. The area displays a number of unusual geological elements, like the multicolored rhyolite mountains and expansive lava fields which connect to one of Iceland‘s most active geothermal areas.
Iceland 1970, Hattver - Jökulgil-Canyon.
Hattver is a vegetated flat spot beneeth the steep slopes of the inner part of the Jökulgil-Canyon.
The Jökulgil-Canyon is situated from Landmannalaugar to the south for about 30 km. The mountains on it´s east side (Barmur, Hábarmur, Torfajökull and Kaldaklofsjöll) are the clearest signs of the caldera, meant to be at the Torfajökull-area. All around the canyon are steep slopes of colourful rhyolite. They are mostly impossible to climb and on the bottom flows the river Jökulgilskvísl.
Iceland 2012, Bláhnúkur (Landmannalaugar).
Bláhnúkur is a 940 metres high volcano and forms together with other volcanoes and lava domes, for example Rauðufossafjöll and Brennisteinsalda, the 12 x 18 km diameter caldera of the Torfajökull volcano complex.

Iceland 2012, Hnausapollur crater lake.
The Hnausapollur crater lake is situated in the Fjallabak Nature Reserve area northeast of Landmannalaugar.
The Lake Hnausapollur (also known as Bláhylur, ancient name Litlavíti, meaning small hell) is one of two crater lakes and forms together with other craters the Veiðivötn system in the south of the river Tungnaá. The other lake is Lake Ljótipollur. Hnausapollur is a 30 hectare lake in a crater which was formed 1130 years ago by an explosive volcanic eruption.
The Veiðivötn system belongs to the Bárðarbunga volcano, which is situated under the icecap of Vatnajokull.
