Santorini is a small, circular archipelago in the Aegean Sea and belongs to the Cyclades island chain in the southern Aegean Sea. It is renowned for its spectacular sea-filled volcanic caldera sourrounded by steep colorful cliffs. The islands of Santorini did not form from a single event, but rather from a variety of eruptions over a long period of time. The 1613 BC +-7 years "Minoan eruption", is known as one of the largest plinian eruptions during the past 10,000 years on earth.
