Nisyros is an active volcano and forms a island with a land area of about 50 square kilometres. It is located in the south of the popular beach holiday island of Kos. Nisyros has a 3 kilometres to 4 kilometres wide caldera. The last eruption of the volcano were phreatic explosions in 1881-87. It is known that a magma chamber below Nisyros is only 3-4 km deep and still rising up.
