The Galapagos islands belongs to Ecuador, which is 926 km to the east. Ecuador annexed the islands in 1832, shortly after its independence. The Galapagos islands consist of 13 major islands (ranging 14 to 4'588 square km), 6 smaller islands, and scores of islets and rocks.
