The Cordillera Central is the highest mountain range of all Caribbean Islands. The highest peak is the Pico Duarte (3'098 m) followed by the Picos La Pelona (3'038 m). The Cordillera Central extends from the plains of Santo Domingo to the northwestern peninsula of Haiti, where the range is known as Massif du Nord.

The Pico Duarte is named after Juan Pablo Duarte (1813-1876), one of the founding fathers of the Dominican Republic.

The Parque Nacional Montaña La Humeadora is located in the southeast of Villa Altagracia and in the northeast of San Cristobal. It covers an area of about 290 square kilometres of the southeastern slopes of the Cordillera Central.

The Parque Nacional Nalga de Maco in the Elías Piña Province covers an area of 278 square kilometres of the western part of the Cordillera Central. The Pico Nalga de Maco at 1'990 metres is known as the highest mountain of the western part of the Cordillera Central.

The Parque Nacional Louis Quin covers an area of 197 kilometres at the eastern extreme of the Cordillera Central. The Loma La Tachuela at 1'545 metres is known as the 2nd highest mountain at the eastern part of the Cordillera Central.

The Parque Nacional Manolo Távarez Justo in the Santiago Rodríguez Province covers an area of 351.87 square kilometres of the northeastern part of the Cordillera Central.
