The Santuario de las Lajas was built inside a canyon of the river Guáitara. The church rises 100 m from the bottom of the canyon and is situated in the municipality of Ipiales in the department of Nariño.
It is a location in the border area, a meeting place, a crossroad of trade and connecting different people and regions that cluster around the sacred magical power of the Virgin of the Rosary.
Historically and geographically it has been connecting point of black communities in the Lower Pacific, indigenous of Cauca, the forest people and pilgrims from Ecuador to Riobamba, Quito, Otavalo, Ibarra and Tulcán as it is 10 km from the border with Ecuador.
