The Calbuco volcano is located in the southeast of Llanquihue Lake and northwest of the Chapo Lake in the Los Lagos Region. It contains a 400-500 m wide summit crater. The volcano and its surrounding area are protected within Llanquihue National Reserve.
The Calbuco volcano is known as one of Chile's most active volcanoes and one of the largest historical eruptions in southern Chile took place from Calbuco in 1893-1894.
